Classic Huayhuash Trek
$ 1,634.00
Widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest trekking adventures, the Classic Huayhuash Trek circles the spectacular Cordillera Huayhuash, a remote mountain range in the Peruvian Andes. The route traverses pristine alpine valleys, turquoise glacial lakes, high mountain passes, and natural hot springs, offering breathtaking views of some of Peru’s highest and most iconic peaks, including Yerupajá, Siula Grande, Jirishanca, Rondoy, and Rasac.
The trek crosses several passes above 4,600 meters, with the highest reaching over 5,000 meters, making it a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience. Along the way, trekkers camp beside crystal-clear lakes, visit the famous Siula Grande Base Camp—known from Joe Simpson’s «Touching the Void»—and experience the untouched beauty and wilderness that have made the Huayhuash Circuit one of the finest trekking routes on Earth. Proper acclimatization and good physical fitness are essential for completing this unforgettable journey.

Itinerary
Bus transfer to Chiquián, with views of the first peaks of the Yerupajá massif. We descend into the Quisipata Valley and then ascend along the Llamac River Valley. We pass through the village of Pocpa and arrive at Cuartelhuain, where we will set up camp.
A slightly rugged ascent takes us to the eastern side of the Huayhuash mountain range. We begin the descent and then make a short climb over a hill, where we will enjoy views of Jirishanca. We then descend to Mitucocha Lake, with spectacular views of the lake and Jirishanca. Camp overnight.
We head towards Carhuac Pass (4,600 m) along a well-marked trail. The views become increasingly spectacular, with panoramic vistas of Yerupajá, Jirishanca, and Rondoy, featuring their dramatic hanging glaciers. Camp overnight.
Beautiful traverse beneath the Siulá Grande wall, with stunning lakes and falling seracs along the way. A unique and unforgettable landscape. From the pass, we enjoy views of a new mountain range, including Carnicero, Trapecio, and Jurao, before descending to Huayhuash. Camp overnight.
We leave the campsite heading towards Trapecio Mountain, reaching our first 5,000 m pass, Trapecio Pass, which connects the Huánuco and Lima regions. We feel the altitude, but we are well acclimatized. The peaks of Cuyoc and Pumarinri dominate the landscape. We descend into the Huanacpatay Valley, surrounded by turquoise lakes and basalt towers, before reaching the Yanapampa campsite at 4,500 m.
We ascend to Santa Rosa Pass along a trail of limestone rocks. From the pass, the panoramic views of the Huayhuash peaks are breathtaking, including Yerupajá, Siulá Grande, Sarapo, Rasac, and the Rosario range. We continue towards the turquoise waters of Jurau Lake, followed by a long descent to Huayllapa (3,500 m), one of the most traditional villages in the Huayhuash mountain range.
We begin the ascent towards the Huatiac campsite along a well-marked trail frequently used by local shepherds and farmers with their livestock. We continue gradually towards Tapush Pass, from where we can see the western face of Diablo Mudo (5,220 m), a popular peak for climbing due to the accessibility of the terrain. We then descend to Gashpapampa, where we will set up camp.
We ascend towards Yaucha Pass, where one final spectacular panorama of the Yerupajá massif awaits us. From here, we can admire the snow-capped peaks from their entire western face, including the needles of Jirishanca, meaning “hummingbird peak,” followed by Yerupajá with its 1,200 m-high wall and the cornices of Rasac. We then descend to Jahuacocha.
A final traverse along the mountainside takes us to Llamacpampa, where we say a final farewell to these magnificent mountains. We then descend to the village of Llamac, where our transportation will be waiting to take us to Huaraz.
