Cordillera Blanca Traverse Trek
$ 2,124.00
Unlike the classic treks of the Cordillera Blanca (the highest tropical mountain range in the world), which follow its transverse valleys, this itinerary crosses the Cordillera Blanca from its eastern slope to its western side. Along the way, you will enjoy spectacular views of the Conchucos Valley while gradually ascending to Contrahierbas Mountain Hut (4,100 m). After several days of progressive acclimatization, you will reach the highest point of the trek at Punta Unión Pass (4,750 m), followed by a descent through the legendary Alpamayo region.
Season: May – November.

Itinerary
Transfer to a 3-star hotel.
Transfer to the bus terminal for our journey to Huaraz. The route follows the Pacific coast, passing through vast desert areas and frequent fog. We then ascend towards Conococha Pass (4,100 m), where, weather permitting, we can enjoy views of the Cordillera Blanca. Arrival in Huaraz and transfer to the hotel.
8-hour bus journey.
Mini trek in the Cordillera Negra, ascending to the viewpoint at 3,700 m to enjoy spectacular views of the Cordillera Blanca. Return to the hotel.
We head south, passing through the towns of Recuay and Catac, where we turn east. We pass close to Querococha Lake (3,890 m), then through the Kawish Tunnel at 4,500 m, before descending to the town of Chavín de Huántar.
We will visit the ruins of this ancient pre-Columbian civilization, dating back nearly 3,000 years and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The remains are still impressive, featuring a large ceremonial plaza with concentric stairways, an imposing truncated-pyramid-shaped temple, and an impressive network of galleries, columns, and porticos. The visit will take approximately 2 hours.
We then continue our journey, passing through the towns of Huari and Acopalca before ascending to Purhuaycocha Lake, where we will set up our first campsite.
6-hour bus journey.
We begin our trek by following the left side of the lake, then gradually ascend to a viewpoint offering one last view of Purhuaycocha Lake. We continue climbing until we reach our campsite on a plateau at 4,230 m.
5–6 hours of trekking. Elevation gain: +650 m.
A very wild and remote stage: we ascend along a trail for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to an altitude of 4,500 m, passing to the right of Perlilla Mountain. From the pass, we enjoy beautiful views of the Cordillera. We then descend along a trail to the confluence of the Tayancocha Valley.
5–6 hours of trekking. Elevation gain: +400 m. Elevation loss: -600 m.
A relaxed day with a pleasant descent to Chacas along a well-marked trail leading to this remote village. We will stay at a lodge and visit this important community in the Callejón de Conchucos, including its church, the Don Bosco School of Arts and Crafts, and the sculptures created by the Mato Grosso NGO.
3–4 hours of trekking. Elevation loss: -500 m.
Descent by vehicle north of Chacas, passing through the village of Sapchá, followed by an ascent to the village of Huecroncocha, where we will set up camp.
2 hours by vehicle. Elevation gain: +100 m.
The ascent becomes increasingly pronounced as we reach Tapush Pass (4,060 m). In front of us, we can admire Chacraraju and Chopicalqui, this time viewing their eastern faces after having admired their southern and western faces from Huaraz. We continue with a steady ascent through this extraordinary landscape to the Contrahierbas Refuge at 4,100 m, near the town of Yanama.
6–7 hours of trekking. Elevation gain: +400 m. Elevation loss: -50 m.
Descent to Yanama (3,400 m), with extraordinary views of the peaks of Chacraraju, Pirámide, and Taulliraju. This is another opportunity to discover the rural life of the remote villages of the Cordillera, particularly the potato fields in Yanama. We then reach the Colcabamba Canyon before ascending to Huaripampa.
6 hours of trekking. Elevation gain: +100 m. Elevation loss: -500 m.
We ascend to Punta Unión Pass, crossing back to the western side of the Cordillera and into the Santa Cruz Valley. Along the way, we will enjoy views of Hatuncocha and Taullicocha lakes, as well as the snow-capped peaks of Taulliraju, Rinrihirca (5,810 m), Artesonraju (6,025 m), and Paria (5,600 m). We then descend to Ichiccocha (3,850 m), where we will set up camp.
6 hours of trekking. Elevation gain: +1,050 m. Elevation loss: -950 m.
We continue descending through the Santa Cruz Valley alongside a beautiful clear-water river, surrounded by lush vegetation and impressive mountains, until we reach Cashapampa, the end point of the trek. We then return by private bus to Huaraz.
