Tour Details
This Ulta–Yanama Trek takes us along the eastern side of Huascarán at 6,768 m.a.s.l. and Chopicalqui at 6,350 m.a.s.l. The trek begins in the Ulta Valley, following a pre-Inca trail once used by different ethnic groups who inhabited the region before the arrival of the Incas around the 15th century, including the Piscopampas, Huari, Conchucos, and Huaylas.
This is one of the ancient routes connecting the two slopes of the Cordillera Blanca: the Pacific and Atlantic watersheds, the latter forming part of the vast Marañón River basin. The highest point of the trek is Yanayacu Pass, or Abra Yanayacu, which in Quechua means “black water.” The pass marks the continental watershed, dividing the waters flowing toward the Pacific Ocean from those flowing toward the Atlantic.
Ulta at 3,900 m.a.s.l. – Yanayacu Pass at 4,850 m.a.s.l. – Ulta Chico Valley – Molinopampa at 3,500 m.a.s.l. – Private transfer to Carhuaz.
From Ulta Bridge, we ascend along a well-marked trail toward Yanayacu Lake at 4,500 m.a.s.l. We then continue along this pre-Hispanic route toward Yanayacu Pass. The final approach follows a narrow trail surrounded by imposing dark-colored rock ridges.
From Yanayacu Pass at 4,850 m.a.s.l., we enjoy spectacular views of Chopicalqui at 6,350 m.a.s.l. and Huascarán at 6,768 m.a.s.l., including their impressive east faces. To the east lies the immense Contrahierbas Glacier at 6,036 m.a.s.l., with the Ichic Ulta Lakes at its foot. The pass forms part of the continental watershed, dividing the waters flowing toward the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
We carefully descend along an exposed trail with steep drop-offs, while enjoying the landscapes of the northeastern side of Yanama. We continue past mountain lakes and through areas of native queñual vegetation before reaching Molinopampa at 3,500 m.a.s.l.
If time and conditions permit, there may be an opportunity to visit the Contrahierbas Refuge at 4,100 m.a.s.l. We then continue along the “Waterfall Trail” until reaching the end of the trek at Molinopampa.
