This is a challenging and unique trek to the highest-altitude refuge in Peru (4,700 m), located beneath the country’s highest tropical peak: Mount Huascarán (6,768 m). Witnessing the sunset over the Cordillera Negra is a breathtaking experience. The overnight stay is in cozy wooden rooms within the mountain lodge.
On the second day, very early in the morning, we walk along the edge of the Raimondi Glacier on Huascarán before descending along an alternate trail to the valley of Musho.

Travel plan
We depart early in the morning in private transport from Carhuaz, ascending through the village of Shilla. Our vehicle takes us up to the community of Huaypán (3,500 m), known for its potato and wheat terraces.
After passing through a eucalyptus forest, we begin our trek on the Huascarán Refuge trail. The steady uphill route skirts the mountain with dominant views over the valley and the Cordillera Negra. Cities like Huaraz, Mancos, and Yungay can be seen in the distance.
Once we reach a rocky promontory, the refuge lies about an hour away on foot. Arrival and overnight at Huascarán Refuge.
7 km aprox.
After watching the sunrise, we enjoy breakfast and then take a short walk along the glacial moraine, with views of both Huascarán peaks and the Huandoys in the distance.
