Tour Details
We begin our itinerary in the main square of Carhuaz and then head toward the village of Maya, one of the main avocado-producing areas in the Carhuaz Valley.
From Maya, we climb for approximately 30 minutes along a gravel road before descending on a scenic trail toward the Tinco Valley, with spectacular views of the snow-capped peaks of Huascarán and Hualcán to the east.
We reach the bridge connecting Tinco and Ataquero, surrounded by fruit trees, including peaches, avocados, and, surprisingly, mangoes and bananas. Staying on the left bank of the Santa River, we continue our MTB route.
We pass along the foothills of Ataquero, where we find extensive fields of prickly pear cactus. This fruit is highly valued in the region, which was once an important producer of cochineal—a natural dye obtained from an insect that lives on the prickly pear cactus and has traditionally been used to produce natural red pigments, including those used in cosmetics.
We continue through Shupluy, following the river along a scenic route bordered by scattered huarango trees.
We then arrive at Guitarrero Cave, which was brought to the attention of the scientific community by American archaeologist Thomas Lynch. The cave contains evidence of one of the oldest known human settlements in Peru, dating back to the 12th millennium BC, around 11,000 BC, during the Lithic period. Archaeological remains also include evidence of numerous plants, including domesticated species such as beans, dating to approximately 8,500 BC. These discoveries have led to the site being considered one of the earliest examples of horticulture and incipient agriculture in Peru and the Americas.
After lunch, we finish the visit with an optional swim in a nearby thermal spring. We then continue along a narrow trail through vegetation dominated by agave and huarango trees. In some sections, the terrain is too technical to ride, so we need to carry our bicycles.
We descend toward a series of impressive suspension bridges and cross over to Mancos, where our vehicle picks us up for the return journey to Carhuaz.
