Chopicalqui is a striking peak that dominates the view from Portachuelo de Llanganuco Pass, often giving the impression of being part of the majestic Huascarán Massif. This exciting ice climb follows the southwest ridge to one of the highest 6,000-meter peaks in the Cordillera Blanca, with the possibility of deep snow conditions along the route.
From the summit, climbers are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Huascarán (6,768 m), Chacraraju (6,112 m), the Huandoy massif, Pisco, and Hualcán.

Itinerary
Arrival by bus at Curva Chopicalqui, located at the bottom of the Llanganuco Valley, at 4,200 m.a.s.l. A short distance separates the road from Base Camp. Upon arrival, we set up camp and prepare the equipment for the upcoming expedition.
Crossing the vast moraine tongue, the route leads us along a long, rugged ridge to Moraine Camp at 4,900 m.a.s.l.
From Moraine Camp, we reach the right side of the glacier and begin ascending, navigating around crevasses on slopes of approximately 30 degrees. We continue toward a small flat area on the southwest ridge, where we establish Camp I at 5,400 m.a.s.l.
We continue the ascent along the southwest ridge, navigating around any potential seracs. In some sections, the snow may be deep. The route features slopes of 40–50 degrees, with short, steeper sections of up to 60 degrees over a rope length, where technical ice axes will be used for progression.
Summit ascent, followed by the descent back to Moraine Camp.
- Day 1: Bus transfer from Marcará to Curva Chopicalqui – Mini trek to Base Camp at 4,250 m.a.s.l.
- Day 2: Ascent from Base Camp to Moraine Camp at 4,900 m.a.s.l.
- Day 3: Ascent from Moraine Camp at 4,900 m.a.s.l. to Camp I “Chopicalqui” at 5,400 m.a.s.l.
- Day 4: Ascent to the Chopicalqui Summit at 6,350 m.a.s.l. – Return to Camp I at 5,400 m.a.s.l.
- Day 5: Return to Base Camp – Bus transfer to Marcará.
- Round-trip transfer from Huaraz to Curva Chopicalqui.
- UIAGM/AGMP-certified mountain guide and assistant guides for groups of more than 4 climbers.
